Healthy competition – summary

The report scores retailers on the following issues relating to nutritional health and health promotion:
  1. Nutritional content - sodium content of ten everyday, own-label processed foods;

  2. Labelling information - nutrition information provided on food labels; use of Guideline Daily Amounts; and use of interpretive 'traffic light' nutrition labelling;
  3. In-store promotions - 'healthy' foods (fruit and vegetables) as a proportion of in-store price promotions; whether stores had sweets or other less healthy snacks at the checkout;
  4. In-store information/advice for customers on healthy eating through leaflets and magazines and via retailers' telephone helplines.

The survey ranks the Co-op top with Waitrose and Marks and Spencer sharing the second place.
